Afghanistan Schizophrenistan?

Afghanistan Schizophrenistan?
Been having schizophrenic thought processes about the Afghan War? Winning? Yet losing? Well that's good, you're sane!

One hemisphere has been hearing Gordon Brown tell parliament in December that we're "winning the battle", and George Bush telling Congress in January: "Afghanistan… is now a young democracy where people are looking to the future with new hope".

And yet "the battle for Hellman has been tougher than we anticipated," "the opium crop is at its highest ever," "President" (and ex-CIA) Karzai blew Paddy Ashdsown out of the water a fortnight ago, and Condoleezza Rice flew to London last week for an emergency meeting with Gordon Brown, to discuss escalating the war. Oh, and you might have heard the odd complaint about our European allies not having their hands chopped off too I mean "doing their bit".

But now THREE recent reports all reach the same conclusion: The US led forces in Afghanistan are NOT winning, and the country faces a humanitarian disaster.

The UN reports that Afghanistan is the 4th most impoverished country in the world, with life expectancy falling to 43, and health services now virtually non-existent: http://tinyurl.com/ypk5pv
~ unless you're a soldier naturally! naturally?!

As for Iraq, under George Bush's "successful surge", they face new levels of desperation and insecurity. In a country which once had the most advanced national health system in the region, cholera and other waterborne diseases are rife. Pollution levels are critical, with the water system contaminated by sewage and rubbish piling up in the streets. Two thirds of Iraqi children have no school place and unemployment remains at 60%: http://tinyurl.com/2zc2bu
~ we won't even mention the trillion year cancerous effects of depleted uranium cos the definitive analysis is not yet in, nobody will pay for it.

And as for Palestine - would the last person out switch off the lights? oh they're already off are they? Despite UN condemnation, George Bush and Gordon Brown are giving unqualified backing to Israel, whose brutal siege of Gaza and the remnants of their democratically elected government violates numerous international laws and is starving the imprisoned people of food, medical supplies and basic amenities

WORLD AGAINST WAR PROTESTS

This is the background to the international WORLD AGAINST WAR protests which will mark the 5th anniversary of the Iraq invasion, and in particular the UK national demonstration in London on Saturday 15 March, which has been called by CND, Stop the War Coalition, and the British Muslim Initiative.

The Stop the War website has full details of coaches booked in 28 towns and cities, which will be regularly updated: http://tinyurl.com/2da68c If your area does not yet have coaches arranged, contact the Stop the War national office, which will help you find a coach near you: email office@stopwar.org.uk; tel 020 7278 6694
